Valve Releases Major Update for Steam Client and Steam Deck

Aug 14, 2023Aug 14, 2023

Valve has recently launched a substantial stable update for the Steam client, targeting both desktop and Steam Deck users. The update brings several fixes and improvements, with a particular focus on Linux, which will also benefit SteamOS on Steam Deck.

Some notable changes include fixing a bug that caused the controller input thread to operate at normal instead of high scheduling priority. Additionally, file dialogs that were not appearing for systems without an active xdg-desktop-portal have been fixed. A rare crash related to shader processing has also been addressed, along with an issue causing the UI to display the wrong image when toggling between small mode and normal mode.

In terms of general improvements, Valve has added a timer to the overlay, allowing users to set custom time limits and receive notifications when time is up. The update also enhances library performance for users with large collections and fixes confirmation dialogs that were not closing with the cancel or X buttons. Other fixes include addressing problems with Steam Guard codes, Steam Overlay’s compatibility with Windows scale factors, and notifications for offline achievements.

The update also improves the Steam Input feature by allowing the copying and pasting of button/axis mappings for unrecognized controllers and ensuring quicker and more reliable updating of selected controller configurations in the configurator. DualSense Wireless Controllers will now remain in DirectInput compatible mode over Bluetooth when Steam Input is disabled.

Other changes encompass the Developer Console, macOS-related issues, and fixes for Big Picture Mode.

Overall, Valve’s latest update for the Steam client and Steam Deck offers numerous improvements and bug fixes across several areas. Users can take advantage of the new timer feature, which is ideal for setting reminders and taking regular breaks. Additionally, Steam Deck owners will appreciate being able to view Steam Deck Verified ratings in their Steam Library, providing valuable information about game compatibility.
